Shillong: Three people sustained injuries after a land dispute turned violent during a joint measurement exercise for the proposed Green Field High Speed Corridor in East Jaintia Hills district on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at Khlieh Wah Rkhiang, where officials had arrived to conduct a survey linked to the corridor’s proposed alignment.
According to sources, disagreements surfaced between residents of Lakadong Ummat and Lama villages over ownership and demarcation of land falling along the project route.
What began as a verbal altercation soon spiralled into a confrontation.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that some individuals brandished locally made daos, and gunshots were allegedly fired during the clash.
Two men from Lakadong Ummat village are accused of opening fire, leaving three residents of Lama village injured.
In response to the violence and reports of firearms and other dangerous weapons being used, East Jaintia Hills District Magistrate Manish Kumar imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023 in the affected areas between the two villages.
The official order noted that tensions flared during the scheduled survey on March 3, 2026, resulting in injuries to several individuals from Lama village.

It also referred to the alleged use of firearms, lathis, daos, ammunition and explosive materials, warning that such actions posed a serious threat to life, property and public order.
Under the restrictions, gatherings of five or more persons have been barred in the disputed zone.
Carrying sticks, lathis, machetes, daos, firearms, ammunition, explosives or any other lethal objects has also been prohibited.
Activities that obstruct movement of people and vehicles, disrupt essential services or disturb peace have been strictly forbidden.
The prohibitory order took effect immediately and will remain operational until further notice from the district administration.
