Shillong: The Meghalaya government has ordered a departmental inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the treatment of late Shillong MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon, with a specific focus on whether a doctor was available at Mawiong Primary Health Centre when he was brought there after collapsing during a futsal game last week.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Monday that the health department is examining the incident and assured that appropriate action would follow the findings of the inquiry.
“An inquiry is going on regarding the availability of a doctor at the PHC. Based on that, the health department will take the necessary steps,” Sangma told reporters.
Syngkon, the Lok Sabha MP from Shillong, collapsed while playing futsal and was first rushed to the Mawiong PHC, as per the report.
He was later shifted to a private hospital in the city, where he was declared dead.
Reports of the alleged absence of doctors at the PHC at the time of the emergency have triggered widespread public concern, with residents and civil society groups demanding accountability and stronger staffing at primary health centres across the state.
Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon, who was also the founding general secretary of the Voice of the People Party, passed away on February 19.
