SHILLONG: President Droupadi Murmu’s three-day visit to Meghalaya and Assam, begins on Monday, with an agenda brimming with inauguration of significant initiatives and community engagements.
Among the highlights in Shillong, is the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the Shillong Peak ropeway project, a significant addition to the state’s tourist infrastructure.
After inaugurating the 5th edition of Meghalaya Games in Tura on Monday, President Murmu is expected to arrive in Shillong on Tuesday around 12:30 pm.
The first leg of her itinerary involves a visit to Law Kyntang in Mawphlang, followed by a civic reception hosted by the Meghalaya government at the Raj Bhavan in Shillong.
Reportedly, the President would virtually inaugurate the upgraded Rongjeng-Mangsang-Adokgre Road and Mairang-Ranigodown-Azara Road during a special function at Mawphlang.

The visit also includes the inauguration of tourist accommodations in the picturesque villages of Kongthong, Mawlyngot, and Kudengrim, highlighting the focus on promoting tourism in the state.
Earlier on January 14, Governor Phagu Chauhan, in anticipation of the President’s visit, inspected all departments of the Raj Bhavan, ensuring a seamless and comfortable stay for the esteemed guest.
President Murmu’s visit to Meghalaya concludes with her departure to grace the golden jubilee celebrations of the Karbi Youth Festival at Taralangso, Diphu in Assam on January 17.
Earlier on January 11, ahead of President Murmu’s visit to Shillong, authorities had issued a traffic advisory, ensuring seamless movement of the VVIP and minimise inconveniences to the public during the visit.
As a precautionary measure, vehicular traffic will be halted for a duration of 30 minutes leading up to President Murmu’s scheduled arrival at all major traffic junctions on January 16, the local press had reported.
