SHILLONG: President of India, Droupadi Murmu, is set to inaugurate the much-anticipated Meghalaya Games 2024, scheduled to kick off on January 15 in Tura, West Garo Hills.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed excitement about the President’s presence, highlighting that her attendance as the chief guest would make the Games “truly memorable”.

“On the 15th, she will grace the Meghalaya Games. On the 16th, she will be in Shillong and will attend a host of programmes,” stated Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, emphasising that the President’s visit aims to inspire the youth and participants alike.

President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to Shillong on January 16 will include laying the foundation stone for the Shillong Ropeway project, underscoring a commitment to enhancing infrastructure and connectivity.

With preparations in full swing for the President’s inaugural visit, security measures are being reinforced.

A senior police officer told a local daily, “We have sought nine additional companies (of paramilitary forces) in the state capital to beef up security during the visit of the President of India.”

Meetings have been ongoing to ensure a smooth and organised experience during the President’s visit, marking a momentous occasion for Meghalaya and its sporting community.

Meanwhile, in a departure from the norm, the third edition of the Meghalaya Games in Tura promises a unique blend of modern and traditional tribal games.

Chief Minister Sangma previously emphasised that beyond being a sporting event, the Games would incorporate traditional sports from Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities.

This initiative aims to reconnect the youth with ancient tribal sports, highlighting the enduring link between tribals and sports.

Approximately 3,000 participants will embark on visits to different regions, facilitating interactions with other youths to foster a deeper understanding of the diverse cultural landscape.

The state government’s vision for the Meghalaya Games aligns with the Fit India programme, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

Sangma announced a shift to an annual schedule for the Games, with the next venue potentially being Nongstoin in West Khasi Hills or another district.
