SHILLONG: Meghalaya Police have initiated a cyber investigation into allegations of extortion by the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) through WhatsApp.
Simultaneously, a senior police official is stationed in Garo Hills to address concerns about the purported resurgence of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).
Responding to press reports, Director General of Police (DGP) LR Bishnoi told a Shillong-based news portal on Thursday that the cyber wing is scrutinising claims of extortion notes being circulated via WhatsApp to numerous residents in the state.
“The cyber wing has been asked to investigate the matter. However, we urge the public that if they receive such demands, they should promptly report it to the police,” he was quoted as saying.
According to the local press, some individuals have complied with demands relayed through the instant messaging service app.
Earlier in January, citing the government’s alleged failure to address their core demands, the proscribed outfit had pulled out of the tripartite peace with the Centre and state government.
The HNLC’s withdrawal from the peace negotiations had raised concerns about the prospects of reconciliation with requests pouring in from the government and opposition alike to revive peace talks.
Regarding the resurgence of the GNLA, DGP LR Bishnoi mentioned that the Inspector General of Law and Order is stationed in Garo Hills to evaluate the situation and engage with local stakeholders.
“Though statements are circulating on social media, verification is essential, and we are actively investigating the matter,” asserted the DGP, soliciting public cooperation.
In an earlier statement on February 23, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong affirmed the state’s resolve to prevent the reformation of the militant GNLA.
“The police are vigilant, and they will prevent any attempt at regrouping. We are prepared to counter such activities,” Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong assured.
State authorities have launched a probe following the circulation of a press release on social media regarding the alleged resurgence of the GNLA.
