Ampati: In a bid to reduce plastic usage and promote better waste management, South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak has issued an order banning plastic bags, covers, and other items below 120 microns within the jurisdiction of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Ampati.
The order, dated May 10, 2025, highlights the detrimental effects of plastic on the environment, citing its role in ecological degradation and waste management challenges.
It notes that thin plastics, being non-recyclable and difficult to destroy safely, contribute significantly to public waste and pollution.
Efforts to educate the public about the environmental hazards of plastic use and the illegality of using plastics below the specified thickness have been emphasised in the directive.
The ban aims to raise awareness while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
The Deputy Commissioner also directed government departments to strictly adhere to the ban, implement effective waste collection and segregation practices, and take stringent action against violations.
Regular monitoring and inspections will be conducted to evaluate the success of these measures and identify areas for improvement.
The order underscores the need for collective responsibility to safeguard the environment, with a strong focus on fostering sustainable waste management practices in Ampati.
