Shillong: More than 3,300 Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) schools in Meghalaya have expressed their intent to be brought under the direct control of the state education department, according to the Meghalaya SSA Schools Association (MSSASA).
The association said on Wednesday that these schools have submitted No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for the handover.
Among them, 3,034 are managed by community bodies, while 298 are run by religious institutions or private organisations.
MSSASA president Aristotle Rymbai told reporters that the education department has received formal consent from 298 privately or religiously managed schools to transfer their administration to the government.
Rymbai further stated that the association has urged the state to introduce a structured pay scale for SSA teachers.
“We were informed through a presentation that a proposal on pay scales has already been prepared. Following the Assembly session, it will be forwarded to the finance department and later placed before the cabinet for approval,” he said.
On the ongoing rationalisation exercise, Rymbai noted that some districts have started redeploying teachers from schools with minimal enrolment to those with higher student numbers.
Meghalaya currently has 5,131 lower primary and upper primary SSA schools across the state.
