Shillong: The National People’s Party (NPP) has released its first list of 24 candidates for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.

In a notification issued on Monday, the Meghalaya Election Committee of the NPP approved the first list of nominees for the council polls, which are scheduled to be held soon. The list covers seats across West, South and North Garo Hills.

The candidates have been chosen based on factors like winnability, loyalty, and past experience.

The list covers constituencies including Siju (Calis G. Momin), Wagesik (Jewil S. Marak), Tura (Charmingstar N. Sangma), Betasing (Sanjay Koch), and Williamnagar (Sengbath R. Marak).

Other nominees are Balsrang Arengh (Amongpara), Kredithson Ch. Marak (Dengnakpara), and Nihim D. Shira (Samandagre), among others.

The party is yet to finalise candidates for five constituencies, Raksamgre, Naguapara, Bocdamgre, Silkigre and Rongrikkimgre.

Earlier this month, the NPP said it was in the final stages of selecting candidates. NPP working president Marquise N. Marak said the party will contest all constituencies in the upcoming GHADC elections and has received an overwhelming response from aspirants.

Further, the party received a major political boost on February 7, with more than 300 members from different political parties formally joining its ranks in the Tura and Garobadha belt of West Garo Hills. The induction programme was held at Garobadha in the presence of senior party functionaries, including MLA Subir Marak and other NPP leaders, marking one of the largest recent political mobilisations in the region.
