The report titled “Hajong community in Meghalaya angered over lack of representation in NPP GHADC tickets”, published on February 24, 2026, incorrectly stated that West Garo Hills Additional Deputy Commissioner Nipon Hajong, MCS, had convened a meeting at his residence.
The information was based on a press statement issued from Aparupa Koch under the title “Hajong Community Reacted to the Announcement of Party Candidates for GHADC Election by NPP.”
It was forwarded to the news desk by Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union president and Northeast News editorial contributor from Ampati, Kandarpa Koch.
After being informed of the inaccuracy, Northeast News contacted Nipon Hajong for verification.
He said that he was in no way involved in any such meeting and added that he was at his office in Tura on February 16, the day the alleged meeting was said to have taken place.
He also advised that such claims should be properly verified, including whether any such community meeting had occurred at all.
The Editor, on behalf of the Northeast News, offers an unconditional apology for the error and for any confusion or inconvenience it may have caused.
We remain committed to accurate, responsible journalism and sincerely regret the lapse in verification in this instance.
