Shillong/Aizawl/Guwahati: Leaders from Northeast India mourned the demise of Pope Francis, remembering his legacy of humility, compassion, and commitment to social justice.
The 88-year-old pontiff, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Monday.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed profound grief, describing Pope Francis as a beacon of inspiration.
“I am deeply saddened by the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis. As the Head of the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope led by example, embodying humility, love, and compassion,” Sangma wrote in a message on X (formerly Twitter).
Mizoram Governor V.K. Singh also paid tribute, hailing the pontiff as a global symbol of peace and humanity.
“Profoundly grieved by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a beacon of compassion, humility, social justice, and peace. He dedicated his life to the service of humanity. May his noble soul rest in eternal peace,” Singh stated.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma echoed similar sentiments, expressing sorrow over the loss. “I express my profound sorrow at the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” he posted on X.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged Pope Francis’s efforts toward Church reforms and his unwavering advocacy for the marginalized.

“It is with deep sadness that we receive the news of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. His efforts for significant reforms in the Church and his concern for the poor and the environment will remain etched in history,” Sarma said.
Pope Francis, known for his simple lifestyle and vocal critiques of capitalism and climate injustice, captured hearts worldwide but also stirred controversy among conservatives.
