SHILLONG: The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has revised its plans for the underpass construction along the Shillong-Dawki road.
The underpass will now terminate a few hundred meters before Anjalee Petrol Pump, instead of extending to Barik Point as originally planned.
The decision to abandon the Barik Point extension was primarily due to complications in land acquisition. A portion of the required land falls within defense property, which the state government was unable to acquire.
According to NHIDCL, the state government has been unable to hand over the necessary land for the project.
While the State Government had previously proposed extending the underpass to Barik Point, the NHIDCL and project consultants had initially believed that land acquisition would not be a significant obstacle.
However, given the challenges faced, the NHIDCL has decided to proceed with the underpass construction up to Anjalee Petrol Pump.

However, the possibility of extending the underpass in the future remains open if the state government is able to acquire the necessary land.
The NHIDCL is currently finalizing the design for the 930-metre underpass. Once the design is complete, technical investigations for the construction will commence.
