Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday inaugurated the newly constructed Synthetic Football Turf at the Madan Centre Playground in Kharbuli, Nongkrem, East Khasi Hills, in the presence of Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla.
The project, whose foundation was laid in 2021, is seen as a significant step toward strengthening sports infrastructure and youth development in the region.
Addressing the gathering, the chief minister said the new facility reflects the government’s commitment to empowering young people through sports and providing them with opportunities to excel.
He noted that Meghalaya, being a youthful state, must continue investing in education, sports, and infrastructure to ensure holistic growth.
“Sports teach discipline, hard work, and teamwork. Over the past seven years, more than 70% of our current sports infrastructure has been developed,” Sangma said, adding that the government is also promoting sports at the grassroots level through block-level leagues and tournaments to engage youth and promote a healthy lifestyle.
The chief minister urged students and local youth to use the new turf responsibly and make full use of it to hone their sporting skills.
Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla lauded the chief minister’s vision for youth and sports development and highlighted various state initiatives supporting athletes, young entrepreneurs, musicians, and youth through training, financial assistance, and employment schemes.
He also underlined that Meghalaya’s preparations for hosting the 2027 National Games are underway, which will offer athletes exposure to world-class facilities.
