Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday conducted an extensive inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in the New Shillong Township, highlighting progress on several major developments aimed at transforming the area into a modern administrative and knowledge hub.
Accompanied by officials from the Planning and Urban Affairs Department, the chief minister visited the construction site of the upcoming Secretariat at Umsawli.
The Secretariat, a flagship project under the state government’s infrastructure initiative, is being developed at a cost of Rs. 1,188 crore and is scheduled for completion by mid-2027. Construction began following the foundation stone laying on January 21, 2025.
Speaking during the visit, Sangma said, “This iconic building will lay the foundation for an active administration. Its design incorporates elements of sustainability and cultural identity, integrated with modern architecture. We eagerly look forward to its completion.”
The Chief Minister emphasized that the Secretariat, once completed, will not only serve as the new seat of governance but also help significantly decongest Shillong city.
He added that internal roadworks in the township are progressing well, with several roads already completed and others under construction.
These roads will enhance connectivity within the township and link key infrastructure projects, improving overall access to Shillong.
Sangma also inspected the under-construction Unity Mall, along with the newly completed Ummir to Mawkhanu Road, which connects to the Administrative and Knowledge City.
Discussions were also held on proposed avenue plantations along key routes to enhance the aesthetic value of the area.
Earlier in the day, the chief minister visited the newly completed Polo Mall, developed under the Smart City Project.
With work on the mall finalised, the process of leasing commercial spaces is now underway. The mall includes areas for entertainment, dining, shopping, and business activities.
In addition to township inspections, Sangma reviewed progress on the Wahumkhrah Riverfront Development Project.
He described the project as crucial for environmental conservation, city beautification, and preparations for the upcoming National Games.

The riverfront initiative focuses on infrastructure development along the Wahumkhrah River, including river cleanup as a core component.
“Phase 1 of the project will be completed soon, while Phase 2 will include commercial and recreational spaces such as shops, eateries, parking, and hostels,” Sangma said.
He also called on citizens to support the government’s efforts in maintaining the cleanliness of rivers, including the Wahumkhrah, stressing collective responsibility for sustainable urban development. “We will work together to achieve our common goal,” he affirmed.
