SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government has allocated land at Mendipathar in North Garo Hills for the establishment of a manufacturing facility catering to carbonated soft drinks and other beverages.
The land agreement was formalised on Friday, with V/S Varun Beverages Ltd, and were handed over by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in presence of James Sangma, Chairman of Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (MIDC).
Highlighting the potential of the project to generate employment for over 500 individuals in the area, both directly and indirectly, the MIDC chairman said that it will boost socio-economic growth in the Garo Hills region.
Describing it as “a significant stride towards creating job opportunities in the private sector”, James also informed that the company has committed to invest over Rs 100 crore in establishing a state-of-the-art facility.
This initiative is sanctioned under the Meghalaya Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (MIIPP) 2024.
Earlier on Thursday, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked with Pepsi Co for the bottling plant.
Chief Minister Sangma expressed his enthusiasm for this collaboration, highlighting its alignment with the vision to propel Meghalaya towards a 10 billion US dollar economy.
“This initiative is in line with the Meghalaya Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (MIIPP) 2024, with nine MoUs inked in the past week alone. These agreements span various sectors, including tourism, food processing, technology, pharmaceuticals, and beverages,” stated Chief Minister Sangma on social media.
