SHILLONG: Senior IPS officer Idashisha Nongrang etched her name in history as she assumed the role of the first woman Director General of Police (DGP) of Meghalaya on Monday.
Expressing a blend of pride and acknowledgment of the significant responsibility, Nongrang embraced her new role with determination.
“There are lots of challenges ahead and I will strive to work to meet those challenges as best as I can,” she said.
Welcoming the new DGP, the official social media handle of Meghalaya Police hailed it as the dawn of a “new era”.
“…Under your leadership, we’re looking forward to creating newer milestones and working towards enhanced safety for our state, leading Meghalaya to a new era,” read the post.
Nongrang brings a wealth of experience to the position, having served in various capacities, including a substantial tenure with the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
Prior to her appointment as DGP, she held the position of Director General of Civil Defence & Home Guard in Meghalaya.
Nongrang’s appointment comes after two senior IPS officers of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre – GP Singh (1991 batch) and Harmeet Singh (1992) – expressed their unwillingness to assume the role of DGP of Meghalaya.
Earlier on Sunday, in his farewell message shared on social media platforms, outgoing DGP LR Bishnoi expressed gratitude for his fulfilling, challenging, and immensely rewarding journey.
He lauded Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s unwavering commitment to a drug-free Meghalaya and praised the resilience and compassion of the people of Meghalaya.
“We have marched forward with steadfast resolve to safeguard our land. The resilient and compassionate people of Meghalaya and their unwavering support have been our strength throughout,” said Bishnoi.
As Nongrang assumes her new role, she embarks on a journey to lead Meghalaya Police into a new chapter, promising to uphold the values of integrity, dedication, and service to the people.
