Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma felicitated athletes who brought laurels to the state at the recently concluded 38th National Games in Uttarakhand.
The event, held at the State Convention Centre, celebrated the achievements of medallists and outlined the government’s roadmap for hosting the 39th National Games in 2027.
Congratulating the athletes, Sangma said, “While I specially congratulate Vikash, Elizabeth, Indra, Kiran, Anandi, and Pynshngain for their medal-winning performances, I also commend all athletes who worked hard to represent Meghalaya in various sports disciplines.”
Looking ahead to the 39th National Games, the chief minister emphasised the importance of preparation, infrastructure, and strategic planning.
“Hosting the National Games is not just about sports—it involves significant logistics, infrastructure, and collective effort. We also aim to improve our medal tally and will adopt multiple strategies to achieve this,” he stated.
He announced investments at both the grassroots and infrastructural levels, highlighting that centres hosting the games are undergoing upgrades.
He added that by 2026, Shillong’s Umroi Airport would be better equipped to handle commercial flights, ensuring improved connectivity for the event.
To enhance Meghalaya’s performance at the National Games, Sangma revealed plans for professional training.
“We recognise the need for expert coaches in various disciplines. Special training programs will be organised for 200-300 athletes who will represent the state,” he said.
He also assured support for athletes employed in government departments, allowing them to focus solely on training for six months to a year.
The chief minister lauded the state’s growing sports ecosystem, stating, “The foundations we have laid in sports, music, and entrepreneurship are investments in our youth. The results are beginning to show.”
During the event, Sangma announced the Meghalaya Outstanding Sportspersons Direct Appointment Policy, which guarantees jobs for medal winners at the National Games, South Asian Games, Olympics, and other major events.
“This policy will motivate our athletes to excel,” he remarked.

Apart from honouring the medallists, cash awards were distributed to 350 athletes excelling in various sports disciplines.
Shillong Lajong FC received financial support of Rs. 1 crore from the government. Additionally, Sangma launched the Meghalaya Sports Action Plan 2025-32 and the Chief Minister’s Football Mission during the ceremony.
Concluding his address, Sangma expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Indian Olympic Association, and others for their support in securing Meghalaya’s hosting rights for the 39th National Games.
“While we celebrate the success of the 38th National Games, we must focus on preparing for 2027 to make the event a grand success,” he added.
