Shillong: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his gratitude to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for gifting him a piece of the region’s renowned Ryndia silk fabric, woven by women artisans from the Ri-Bhoi district.
The fabric, which received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag last year, is a testament to Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship.
In a letter addressed to Sangma, Modi highlighted the growing global interest in sustainable and ethically produced products, emphasising the importance of promoting such items on the international stage.
“Today, people around the world are increasingly seeking products that not only minimise the impact on the environment but are also ethically produced, reflecting a growing global commitment to sustainability and social responsibility,” the prime minister wrote.
Acknowledging the cultural significance of Ryndia silk, Modi stated, “Your thoughtfulness is touching and is deeply appreciated. It is in this context that products such as ‘Ryndia Silk’ stand out.”
He also noted that the GI tag for the fabric symbolizes India’s dedication to showcasing unique regional products on a global platform.

Reflecting on his visit to Meghalaya, Modi expressed his admiration for the state’s natural beauty, the vibrant energy of its youth, and the warmth of its people.
“Together, we will continue to serve the people of the state and ensure that Meghalaya plays a key role in the creation of Viksit Bharat,” he added, reiterating his vision of a developed India.
Sangma shared the Prime Minister’s letter on his X account, extending his gratitude to the women weavers of Ri-Bhoi who created the gifted piece.
