RESUBELPARA: A series of awareness programmes on drug abuse and illicit trafficking concluded today, marking the observation of the International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking at the Multi Facility Hall in Gokulgre, Resubelpara, North Garo Hills.
During the month-long programme, departments such as the District Mental Health Society, Social Welfare Office, and District Legal Services Authority of North Garo Hills organised various awareness programmes on drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
Schools hosted slogan and caption writing competitions under the theme “Evidence is clear: invest in prevention”, and sensitisation programmes on the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) 1985 were held at various venues across the district.
The programme, hosted by the District Social Welfare Officer in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society (MSRLS) NGH and Mendal Sports and Youth Club, saw active participation from members of various self-help groups, village organisations, and school students.
Attendees were enlightened on the problems that illicit drug use brings upon individuals and society.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Assistant Commissioner & BDO of Bajengdoba C&RD Block, Liam T.G. Momin, called for collective cooperation from all stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse.
He highlighted that individuals and communities must come together to curb illicit drug use and adopt appropriate preventive measures and rehabilitation centres to achieve a drug-free society.
Momin urged the gathering to understand the objective of the programme and to carry forward the message of an empowered, drug-free society.
Earlier, Dr B.D. Shira, Senior Medical & Health Officer of Resubelpara, discussed the various health implications of drug use and highlighted the types and effects of different drugs.
DSWO Norimchi Sangma and PR Marak, District Mission Specialist (MSRLS) NGH, also spoke on the occasion.
As part of the programme, DSWO Norimchi Sangma led a pledge-taking ceremony, urging the gathering to join the drug-free India campaign and, specifically, the drug-free North Garo Hills district initiative.
