SHILLONG: Newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang has highlighted the urgent need to transform Meghalaya into a safe haven for women.
Despite ongoing efforts over the years, DGP Nongrang acknowledged that crimes against women in the state have not declined but have instead increased.
“We haven’t been able to achieve the results we have been hoping for,” Nongrang stated during a press conference on Tuesday.
“Therefore, I feel that we need to reassess our strategies and possibly rethink and rework our approach towards tackling such issues,” she added.
DGP Nongrang, who assumed office on Monday, stressed on the importance of strengthening the relationship between the police force and the community.
To this end, she announced the initiation of a weekly open house every Thursday, starting this week.
In an official statement, Nongrang declared that she will be available to meet the public to address any pertinent issues or grievances every Thursday between 11 am and 2 pm at the DGP’s office.
“We encourage all citizens to take advantage of this opportunity to discuss their concerns directly with the DGP,” a statement released by the DGP’s office, read.
Registrations for appointments will be accepted at the Police Headquarters Gate from 10 am to 11:45 am on Thursdays.
DGP Nongrang also expressed her determination to change the public perception of the Meghalaya Police as being hostile. “My challenge will be to defeat that perception,” she asserted.
Nongrang outlined her key priorities, which include maintaining law and order, preventing and detecting crimes, and specifically combating crimes against women.
“Basic policing involves maintaining law and order, prevention and detection of crimes, and focusing on areas where we see more disturbing trends,” she said.
