SHILLONG: In a major boost to healthcare infra, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated a specialized Babies’ Critical Care Unit at the Ganesh Das Government Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Shillong.
This facility is the first-of-its-kind in a Meghalaya government hospital, specializing in high-risk pregnancies and advanced neonatal care.
This state-of-the-art facility is equipped with SNCU, NICU and MNCU, aiming to provide critical care and support to vulnerable patients.
During the inauguration, he emphasized that while investments in infrastructure and equipment are crucial, the dedication of healthcare professionals is of utmost importance.
He praised the team at Ganesh Das Hospital for their dedication and transformation despite challenges. Sanmga said, “It is inspiring to see such commitment and other health centers in the state should draw inspiration from this example.”
The Chief Minister also highlighted that approximately 9 percent of the state budget is allocated to the health sector and assured of further support for the hospital’s development.
Attending the inaugural event, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh stated that the government is committed to ensuring that every patient and child receives the best possible care.
She described the new Babies’ Critical Care Unit as a beacon of hope for the citizens.

The SNCU-NICU complex, which became operational on May 1, 2024, was funded through hospital resources generated from PMJAY-MHI.
The complex features 6 NICU beds with advanced capabilities such as Non-Invasive and Invasive Ventilation, CPAP, and HFNC, along with a 10-bed maternal and newborn care unit. Additional funding from MMDSL and the office of DHS-MI has supported the acquisition of equipment and staffing.
