Shillong: Marking a major milestone in the state’s higher education landscape, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma visited the Shillong Government College of Engineering on Monday — the first government engineering institution in the state — following its official approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to begin academic programs from 2025.
The institution, located at Mawlai Kynton Massar in East Khasi Hills district, received the AICTE’s Letter of Approval on April 30 to launch two undergraduate courses — Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering — under its affiliation with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
Each programme will begin with an initial intake capacity of 30 students for the 2025–26 academic session.
During his visit, the chief minister was joined by officials from the Education Department and Shillong Polytechnic College.
He inspected the college infrastructure and engaged in discussions with faculty members to assess institutional needs ahead of its academic rollout.
Sangma assured the faculty that the government would actively address infrastructure and logistical challenges to ensure the college meets all AICTE norms before becoming fully operational.
He also responded positively to requests from Shillong Polytechnic faculty regarding increased support for scientific research.
Sangma noted that the current Chief Minister’s Research Fellowship (CMRF) primarily supports research in arts and culture, but efforts are now underway to broaden its scope to include science and technology-related research.
“This is a proud moment for Meghalaya as we take a significant step forward in technical education with our first government engineering college. We are committed to strengthening its foundation to empower future engineers from the state,” Sangma said.
