Shillong: Filmmaker Dominic Megam Sangma has brought national recognition to Meghalaya with his Garo-language film Rimdogittanga (Rapture), which recently won the award for Best Feature Film in Garo at the 71st National Film Awards.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma took to social media to congratulate Sangma, calling his work an example of “powerful storytelling” deeply rooted in indigenous traditions.
“His cinematic voice reflects the richness of our tribal heritage and way of life,” the chief minister said, applauding the filmmaker’s continued commitment to authentic cultural narratives.
Rapture, directed by Dominic and produced by Anna Films, tells a haunting story through the perspective of a 10-year-old boy battling night blindness.
Set in a remote village gripped by rumours of child abductions, the film blends visual poetry with spiritual and psychological undertones, drawing heavily on Garo beliefs and folklore.

The film, already celebrated at several international festivals, was awarded the Rajat Kamal (Silver Lotus) along with a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh. Critics have praised it for its compelling visuals and emotional depth.
Highlighting the state government’s ongoing efforts to support creative talent, Sangma reiterated plans to establish a dedicated Film Institute in Meghalaya and host district-level film festivals.
The initiatives—unveiled during the Hello Meghalaya – Integrated Grant Disbursement Event—are part of the draft Meghalaya Film Tourism & Creative Media Policy 2025, which envisions skill-building, institutional collaboration, and a thriving local film industry.
