Shillong: Rakesh Saha, a young environmentalist from Meghalaya‘s West Garo Hills district, has been selected as one of India’s 30 climate champions.
The prestigious honour, bestowed by UNICEF India and YuWaah, follows a rigorous selection process involving thousands of applicants nationwide.
Rakesh, the son of retired teacher Pradip Ch. Saha, will participate in a six-month National Youth Climate Consortium fellowship. As part of this program, he will focus on educating young people in Meghalaya about climate change.
His role will involve raising awareness, inspiring young people to adopt sustainable practices, and driving action on environmental issues.
A graduate of Don Bosco College, Tura, with a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology and a Master’s degree from Mizoram University, Rakesh has made significant contributions to wildlife conservation. His notable achievements include victories in various state-level competitions, such as the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society Quiz competition.
Known for his contributions to wildlife conservation and environmental education, Saha has a proven track record of organizing programs for school students and youth.
He also participated in national-level climate conferences, including the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) 2024 and a Training of Trainers (ToT) program in Dehradun, thereby enhancing his skills and knowledge in climate action and environmental advocacy.
“Being selected as a Climate Champion is a great honor,” Saha said.

He further added, “I am eager to use this platform to educate and engage young minds in climate action. My goal is to inspire others to take proactive steps in environmental conservation.”
