SHILLONG: Taking cognizance of the misuse of domestic LPG cylinders by commercial establishments, the West Jaintia Hills District Administration in Meghalaya has issued a notice prohibiting the use of domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes.
The notice strictly prohibits all proprietors of hotels, restaurants, dhabas, canteens, and street food vendors in the district from using domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes.
“The district administration will conduct a surprise inspection in this regard,” the notice stated.
As per the notice, any establishment found using 14.2 kg LPG domestic cylinders instead of commercial LPG cylinders will face stern action in accordance with the Gas Cylinder Rules, 2016.
The district administration has initiated the step to check the misuse of domestic LPG cylinders across the district.
The Gas Cylinder Rules, 2016 is a comprehensive set of regulations formulated by the Government of India to ensure the safe handling, storage, transportation, and use of compressed gas cylinders.
A huge gap between the price of domestic and commercial LPG cylinders is the major reason behind the use of former in commercial establishments. Domestic cylinders come with a government subsidy.
