Shillong: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Thursday announced Nongthymmai MDC Winston Tony Lyngdoh as the new chief executive member (CEM) designate of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
The decision comes after Langkyrdem-Laitkroh MDC Shemborlang Rynjah resigned from the top post citing health issues.
Rynjah’s resignation was submitted to the Governor on Wednesday, and the party is now awaiting the formal summoning of the House for the election of the new CEM, VPP spokesperson Powell Sohkhlet confirmed.
The nomination of Lyngdoh was made unanimously during a meeting chaired by party president Ardent Basaiawmoit and attended by all VPP MDCs.
Basaiawmoit said Jaiaw MDC Denzil Raynard Chen will also join the Executive Committee as a new member.
Notably, the party has chosen to do away with the post of deputy CEM to avoid instability in the Council.
“If the CEM resigns, the presence of deputy CEMs would not guarantee stability. Therefore, the existing Executive Committee has been dissolved and a new one will be formed,” Basaiawmoit explained.

On the matter of portfolios, the VPP has decided to leave the responsibility to the discretion of the new CEM.
Basaiawmoit expressed confidence that Lyngdoh would continue the reforms initiated under the outgoing leadership.
He pointed out that the VPP-led EC, which completed seven months in office, had already initiated significant changes, including a transparent recruitment process and the streamlining of trade and elaka departments.
