Shillong: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has suspended its sitting legislator from North Shillong, Adelbert Nongrum, citing involvement in anti-party activities. Alongside Nongrum, four other party leaders—Snarbor Laloo, Imti Jamir, Wlistone Sohshang, and Richinbusiness Marwein—have also been suspended for similar reasons.
In a letter addressed to Nongrum, VPP vice president Kara H. Sen referred to a show-cause notice previously issued to him.
The party stated that his response was carefully reviewed, but instead of showing remorse or addressing the concerns raised, Nongrum’s reply was described as defensive, confrontational, and lacking acknowledgment of the harm caused to the party’s interests.
The VPP further emphasised that Nongrum’s response demonstrated a disregard for party discipline and principles, an attitude that could not be ignored.
After thorough deliberation, the party deemed his explanation unsatisfactory and, in accordance with Article III, Clause 5 of the VPP Constitution, suspended him for three years, effective immediately.
As part of the suspension, Nongrum will forfeit all positions, responsibilities, and membership rights within the party.
He will also be prohibited from representing the VPP in any official capacity or public forum. Additionally, he has been advised to avoid any actions that could further damage the party’s reputation.
