Baghmara: In a significant push towards sustainable tourism and community-led development, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the Chitmang Chaiwat Nature-Based Glamping Project on Tuesday.
Located at Badri Rongdong in South Garo Hills, the initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to eco-friendly tourism and local empowerment.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, the chief minister emphasised the collaborative approach adopted by the government to enhance Meghalaya’s tourism infrastructure.
He acknowledged the efforts of the Soil Conservation Department, local stakeholders, and Minister Marcuise N. Marak, who proposed naming the project in honour of the late Purno Agitok Sangma.
“This project is a testament to our vision of showcasing Meghalaya’s tourism potential to the nation while maintaining a balance between environmental conservation and development,” said Sangma.
He highlighted the project’s role in transforming 21.48 hectares of previously degraded land into a flourishing eco-tourism destination.
The Chitmang Chaiwat Eco-Tourism Project integrates water security, ecological restoration, and the creation of tourism infrastructure.
Its Tourist Cabin Complex features traditional Garo-style cabins and eco-friendly PVC dome tents, reflecting the region’s cultural and natural heritage.
These developments aim to generate employment, boost the local economy, and attract visitors to Meghalaya’s scenic landscapes.
During the event, Sangma reiterated the government’s broader commitment to sustainable growth, announcing upcoming projects to enhance Wari Chora in South Garo Hills and Siju Cave and Mandalgre in East Garo Hills.
