Byrnihat: A tragic road accident near 17th Mile in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district claimed the life of a school student and left several others injured on Thursday morning after a clinker-laden truck rammed into a school bus.
The incident occurred around 8 am when a bus belonging to Mount Zion Academy was stationed by the roadside to pick up students.
A truck travelling from Shillong towards Guwahati reportedly went out of control and crashed into the rear of the bus with force. The truck driver and his helper abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene immediately after the collision.
At the time of the accident, around 20 students were inside the bus.

Seven children sustained critical injuries and were rushed to hospitals in Guwahati for advanced medical care, while students with minor injuries were treated at the Byrnihat Primary Health Centre.
One of the seriously injured students, Maxwell Lyngdoh of 19th Mile area in Ri-Bhoi, later died during treatment at a hospital in Jorabat.
Police personnel from the Byrnihat Police Outpost reached the site soon after the crash and initiated an investigation. Authorities said all legal procedures have been completed and further action is being taken in accordance with the law.
