SHILLONG: Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, has declared that Meghalaya is transitioning from an “extractive economy to a regenerative” one, with a strong focus on investing in human capital.
Speaking at an event marking the handover of land for the construction of the National Law University near the state’s capital Shillong, Chief Minister Sangma underlined the importance of youth in the country’s development, stating that every young individual must contribute to the nation’s growth.
“A regenerative economy develops and is based largely on human capital. Hence, our government’s policies have moved towards ensuring that we invest in human capital that we believe is the future for our state,” Sangma told the gathering.
At the event, the Chief Minister officially handed over land for the construction of the permanent campus of the National Law University and the state judicial academy to Meghalaya High Court Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee.
Later, taking to social media, Sangma, stated that this investment can serve as a catalyst for social development and further propel Meghalaya’s progress. He also noted that the step taken would open numerous opportunities for students seeking legal education.
“Investing in human apital has been the mission of the Govt. which we believe can be an instrument for social design to further Meghalaya’s progress. This landmark step will open a plethora of opportunities for our students to pursue legal education,” he wrote.
Sangma also highlighted the state government’s efforts to create infrastructure for higher and professional education courses. He stressed that educational and professional institutions should not solely function as academic entities but must actively collaborate with the government to provide solutions to the challenges faced by the administration.
In his address, Justice Banerjee expressed his aspiration to create a conducive learning environment at the National Law University. He stressed on the importance of the university sharing tools and methods with students, enhancing their educational experience.
“We want this university to be an institute where we share with you the tools and the methods,” he said.
Justice Banerjee also voiced hope that the university would see increased enrolment of local students and called upon everyone to support the institution’s growth, fostering a brighter educational landscape in Meghalaya.
