The Meghalaya government on Monday approved the establishment of a specialised Urban Warfare Training Facility (UWTF) aimed at enhancing the operational readiness of the State police, officials said.
According to a notification issued by the Home (Police) Department, the facility will be developed at Mawiong, around 20 km from Shillong. It is designed to provide realistic and scalable training to police personnel to meet emerging urban security challenges.
The UWTF will offer instruction ranging from basic close-quarter battle techniques to advanced operations, including multi-storey building clearance, hostage rescue, breaching procedures and the use of urban surveillance systems.

The initiative is expected to strengthen the State’s response capabilities, reduce risks to security forces and improve coordination among agencies during urban operations.
In a separate decision, the government also cleared the setting up of a Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare (CIJW) school at Baghmara in South Garo Hills district.
Officials said the CIJW school will focus on specialised training for State police personnel and commando units engaged in counter-insurgency and jungle warfare operations.
The facility will also cater to special units operating in dense forest and difficult terrain, further bolstering Meghalaya’s internal security preparedness.
