Shillong: The Meghalaya government is set to introduce a new rule requiring commercial vehicle operators to prominently display driver information inside their vehicles — a move aimed at enhancing passenger safety and accountability.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, who is also the state government spokesperson, announced the upcoming regulation on Tuesday following a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar at the state secretariat.
Under the new directive, commercial vehicles with transport permits issued by the district transport offices (DTOs) will be required to display the driver’s name, licence number, contact information, and address inside the vehicle.
“This measure is designed to instil a sense of security among travellers and act as a deterrent to any potential misconduct by drivers,” Lyngdoh said.
“When passengers know who is behind the wheel, it builds trust and encourages responsible behaviour.”
The rule will apply exclusively to vehicles operating with commercial permits. Private vehicles, government-owned vehicles, and those under public sector undertakings will be exempt.

Lyngdoh noted that with tourism steadily growing in Meghalaya, ensuring visitor safety has become increasingly important.
“This is a small but effective step that strengthens the state’s overall security ecosystem,” he said.
Once the official notification is issued, commercial vehicle owners will be given a one-month deadline to comply with the new requirement.
“This initiative empowers passengers while reinforcing accountability among commercial drivers,” Lyngdoh added.
