Shillong: In a significant boost to sports infrastructure, Meghalaya is set to construct the largest football stadium in India. The ambitious project will be constructed with an estimated cost of Rs 700 crore.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that the construction work of the Mawkhanu sports complex is likely to begin within a week.
Upon completion, this stadium will be India’s first of its kind, designed exclusively for football.
Unveiling the state government’s game-changing vision, CM Sangma stated, “The ambitious project is part of Meghalaya’s comprehensive football development plan. The Mawkhanu Sports Complex will be the country’s largest dedicated football stadium, which will be built at a cost of Rs 700 crore.”
He said, “The work has been allotted, and construction will begin, perhaps within a week, depending on the rain. We expect to complete this stadium by 2027.”
He reiterated that this will be the largest dedicated football stadium in India, distinguishing it from other stadiums that offer multiple facilities.
The state has also planned to install 50 artificial football turfs by 2027, the highest in any Indian state. “Of these, 25 are already under construction and another 25 have received approval,” the chief minister said.
“This project is more than just infrastructure; it’s about creating a sustainable grassroots football ecosystem. The goal is to provide young athletes with a proper environment to train, play, and grow,” he added.

He further stated, “We’re also focusing on creating leagues at the district, block, and even village levels to foster a deep-rooted sporting culture. That’s how the culture of sports and football can be developed.”
With these infra developments, Meghalaya aims to emerge as a powerhouse in Indian football.
