Williamnagar (Meghalaya): A massive crowd turned up at Williamnagar in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills on Monday to commemorate the 78th birth anniversary of former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma and mark the 13th foundation day of the National People’s Party (NPP).
The event, held at the Rongrenggre playground, drew party supporters and delegations from across the Northeast.
Floral tributes were offered by Sangma’s wife Soradini K Sangma, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, and other dignitaries.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who also heads the NPP, paid an emotional tribute to his father, recalling his humility and unwavering optimism.
“Even when only two people attended a meeting in Manipur during the party’s early days, he believed it was the start of a movement,” Conrad said.
Describing his father as a visionary leader, he added, “The people of the Northeast embraced him and his party, making it a matter of pride for Garo Hills. ‘Purno’ means complete, and he truly lived a complete and meaningful life.”
The celebrations featured a singing competition, the release of a coffee table book, and the inauguration of the PA Sangma Photo Gallery.
Over 300 new members who recently joined the party were felicitated, while athletes from East Garo Hills received the PA Sangma Achievers’ Award.
Soradini K Sangma and several of PA Sangma’s long-time associates were also honoured for their contributions.
