Shillong: In a moment of pride for Meghalaya, 15-year-old Kisen Wanniang from the South West Khasi Hills district has received the distinguished ‘Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar’ for his remarkable bravery and altruism.
President Droupadi Murmu bestowed the award upon Kisen, alongside 16 other outstanding children, during a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Thursday.
Kisen’s courageous deed came to light after he saved four children from drowning in the Maweitksar River in Mawlangwir, South West Khasi Hills, on May 25, 2024.
His quick response and brave actions have inspired many, earning him this national honour, which is India’s highest civilian award for children.
This award, given annually by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, celebrates excellence in bravery, innovation, education, and social service.
The Mawlangwir Dorbar Shnong and the families of the children he rescued have hailed Kisen as a hero, expressing deep gratitude for his life-saving actions.
His bravery has brought honour to Meghalaya and highlighted the importance of selflessness and valour among India’s youth.
This year’s Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar recognised 17 children from 14 states and Union territories for their extraordinary contributions in fields like art, culture, bravery, innovation, and social service.
Kisen’s story serves as a shining example of the power of prompt action and steadfast courage.
