Shillong: A task force has been constituted to conduct a detailed audit and inspection of industrial units in Byrnihat Town, following directives from the Meghalaya Forest and Environment Department.
The initiative is part of an effort to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and gather necessary information as outlined in official communications.
The directive mandates the task force to perform a thorough assessment and provide detailed information on industrial operations in the area.
The task force, which includes senior officials and environmental experts, will be led by S. Swer, Senior Scientist, as the team head.
Other members include S. Syiem, Environmental Engineer; Y.F.H. Laloo, Environmental Engineer; M.S. Tiewsoh, Environmental Engineer; and M.N. Warbah, Scientist ‘B.’
The team has been instructed to submit its report, complete with recommendations, by March 26, 2025, without fail.
The findings will be instrumental in guiding further action and policy decisions concerning industrial practices and environmental sustainability in Byrnihat.

Earlier, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed concern over Byrnihat’s grim distinction as the world’s most polluted city, as per the World Air Quality Report 2024 by Swiss technology company IQAir.
Sangma described the situation as “disturbing” and assured citizens that the government is working tirelessly to mitigate pollution in the industrial hub near the Assam border.
