Shillong: Meghalaya is gearing up to host the prestigious National Games in early 2027, with plans to hold the event in February or March, as per the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA).
John F Kharshiing, MSOA president, shared the timeline, stating that the state expects to complete most of the required sports infrastructure by the end of 2025 or, at the latest, by March 2026, to ensure the event is ready to take place.
The government has decided to formally communicate with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) that we will be prepared to host the National Games in 2027, Kharshiing affirmed.
In alignment with this plan, Meghalaya’s Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Shakliar Warjri, recently sent an official letter to Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, to inform him of the state’s decision to host the games in the first quarter of 2027.
Kharshiing also emphasised the MSOA’s commitment to meeting this ambitious goal within the next two years.

Reflecting on the agreement signed in 2018 between the state government and the IOA, he reminded that the state had bid to host 36 sports disciplines during the National Games.
A recent review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was convened to evaluate the progress of sports infrastructure development projects essential for the successful execution of the games.
The meeting saw participation from senior government officials, including Vijay Kumar, Commissioner and Secretary of Sports and Youth Affairs, as well as MSOA representatives.
The discussions were aimed at ensuring that the necessary infrastructure is developed in time for the event.
