SHILLONG: After a hiatus of two years, students in Meghalaya appeared for the offline Common University Entrance Test (CUET) on Wednesday.
The examinations are scheduled to continue till May 18 across 26 centres in the state, with 12 in Shillong, 5 in Jowai, and 9 in Tura.
The CUET Examination offers both online and offline modes, with computer-based tests (CBT) and traditional pen-paper examinations.
The online examination is slated for May 21, 22, and 24.
With a total of 18,422 students registered for the CUET, the state has witnessed significant participation. Shillong centres expect 8,535 students, Jowai 4,269, and Tura 5,618.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) is holding the CUET Examination, with the state extending assistance in identifying examination venues.
Results for CUET 2024 will be announced by the NTA on June 30.
In the past two years, the CUET examination was suspended in Meghalaya amid student protests and pressure from various groups citing students’ unpreparedness due to recent examination reforms.
In 2023, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma appealed to the Centre for CUET exemption, highlighting delays in state board examinations due to state legislative assembly elections.
The Union Ministry of Education, heeded the request, granting exemption to Meghalaya and other states in the Northeast from appearing for CUET.
Earlier this month, the NTA faced scrutiny over reported discrepancies in the conduct of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in Jowai, Jaintia Hills, and Nongpoh in Ri Bhoi.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has requested re-examinations in these centres, awaiting a response from the central agency.
The CUET examination serves as a gateway for admission to various undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses at premier central universities nationwide.
