Shillong: The members of the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and Khasi Students’ Union (KSU)’s NEHU unit on Monday forced the registrar, Colonel (Retd) Omkar Singh, to leave the university campus.
The students also locked the entrance of the administrative block of the university.
The incident occurred after student groups at NEHU found that Singh had entered the campus without prior notification.
NEHUSU President Sandy Sohtun stated that they had immediately gone to the university after receiving information that the Registrar was present inside the campus.
He said that they had approached the acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. N Saha, who confirmed that he had no information about Singh resuming his duties.
Sohtun stated that the students had even visited the Registrar’s quarters and found him organizing his files and documents.
“We told the Registrar that he should have sent someone to collect his files and documents since we do not want him to enter the university,” the NEHUSU president said.
The students then escorted Singh off the campus and locked the entrance to the administrative block.
“We are firm in our stand not to allow the registrar to re-enter the university,” Sohtun added.
Sohtun also pointed out that this was not the first instance of the Registrar visiting the university without prior notice.
“He seemed to be aware that the campus would be largely empty due to the ongoing winter vacation,” Sohtun added.
Meanwhile, NEHU Vice Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla has extended his earned leave until January 12.
The student organizations have decided to prohibit Prof. Shukla from entering the university premises, citing his leadership as counter-productive and detrimental to the institution’s progress.
