Shillong: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has voiced strong concern over the growing infiltration of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh into India through porous stretches of the border in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills region.
The student body alleges that these cross-border movements are being facilitated by local agents or “dalals,” casting doubts over the effectiveness of current border management efforts.
In a formal appeal, the JSU urged the police department to take immediate and decisive action to curb such activities, warning that unchecked infiltration threatens the safety, identity, and rights of the indigenous population.

The union has called for several specific measures to be implemented without delay, including the deployment of more personnel at infiltration check gates, heightened scrutiny of tourist and other vehicles suspected of transporting illegal immigrants, and closer collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF) to secure high-risk areas along the international border.
“We appeal to the authorities to treat this issue with the seriousness it deserves,” the JSU stated, emphasising that effective action is essential to preserve the demographic and cultural integrity of the region.
