Shillong: The All Meghalaya SSA School Teachers Association (AMSSASTA) ended their 21-day indefinite sit-in demonstration on Monday after the state government assured of increasing the salaries of SSA teachers in the state.
The president of the All Meghalaya SSA School Teachers Association (AMSSASTA), Peter Thyrniang, announced the suspension of the 21-day indefinite sit-in demonstration following a meeting with Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and officials of the Education Department at the main secretariat in Shillong.
“We have decided to suspend our agitation after the state government has agreed to our demand for salary enhancement,” Thyrniang said.
“Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh assured that the government would make a decision within a few months,” he stated.
However, due to the model code of conduct (MCC), the government cannot disclose the amount of the salary increase or the effective date, he said.
Thyrniang said, “The association is firm in its demand for a 100% salary increment, considering that the last increment was given eight years ago in 2016. The lower primary school teachers are presently getting only Rs 19,044 and upper primary school teachers at Rs 20,493.”
The association has decided to cancel the planned rally on October 23 due to the recent developments.
