Shillong: The official mascot and theme song of the 6th Meghalaya Games was unveiled at a curtain raiser event held at the District Library Auditorium in Mynthong, Jowai in Meghalaya.
Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri introduced the mascot, “U Kiang,” and the theme song, “Niom Beit Naphang,” both of which symbolise unity, sportsmanship, and the rich cultural heritage of Meghalaya.
The theme song, “Niom Beit Naphang,” captures the essence of teamwork and sportsmanship, while the mascot, “U Kiang,” embodies the courage and resilience of a freedom fighter, reflecting the strength and determination of the people of Meghalaya.
The event was attended by several notable figures, including local MLA and chairman of the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA), Wailadmiki Shylla, and working president of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA), John Kharshiing.
Other distinguished guests included officials from the state government, local leaders, and community representatives, all of whom highlighted the state’s ongoing commitment to sports development.
In his speech, Warjri stressed the importance of investing in sports infrastructure and youth development.
He pointed out that sports not only instill discipline but also promote unity among the youth.
He further emphasised that the state government has focused on enhancing existing sports facilities in schools and colleges, ensuring that these venues continue to serve educational institutions and local communities long after the events have concluded.
Warjri also outlined the government’s vision of empowering athletes to excel at both the state and national levels.
Acknowledging that the full impact of these initiatives may take time, he reassured the audience of the government’s unwavering commitment to nurturing and supporting sporting talent.

The minister also expressed gratitude for the collective efforts of government officials, local leaders, and community organisations in making the 6th Meghalaya Games a reality.
He wished all the athletes the best of luck as they prepared for the upcoming events.
Following the ceremony, Warjri and MLA Shylla, along with other organisers, toured various sports venues to assess the arrangements and readiness for the forthcoming National Games.
The event also featured a performance by the Elev8 Tribes Choir, who added a melodious touch to the occasion with their renditions of two songs.
