Ampati: Young chess prodigies from Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district showcased their talent during the 2-day ‘Inter-School Chess Tournament 2024’ at Ampati Degree College.
Organized by the South West Garo Hills District Chess Association in collaboration with the District Administration, the event saw enthusiastic participation from 44 chess players representing schools from South West Garo Hills district and Tura.
The tournament, which kicked off on Friday, drew participants across three age categories: under 10, under 12, and under 16.
The event sought to foster a strong chess culture and nurture young talent within the region.
SDSEO Emphul Marak graced the inaugural day, while MDC of Boldamgre, Stevie Marak attended the closing ceremony and awarded prizes to the winners.
Amaziah Gapesa Ch. Marak from Casarina Public School, Tura, clinched the open category title with an impressive 6 points.
Chongkimbea M Sangma from St. Claret Higher Secondary School, Ampati, topped the under-16 category with 5.5 points.
Yunkeycheah Ch. Marak of Boldamgre School and Jakgitelat Ch. Momin of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Tura, secured second and third positions.
In the under-12 category, Baiyangsrang Sangma of Casarina Public School, Tura, claimed the first position with 6 points.
Adora K Marak of Sherwood School, Tura, and Abrin M Sangma of St. Mary’s School, Ghatgre, secured the second and third positions respectively.

The under-10 category saw Aesara Ringmitelachi Ch. Momin of Soter School, Tura, secured the first position with 5 points.
Takimra Sangma of Casarina Public School, Tura, and Ansame Marak of Sun Town English School bagged the second and third positions respectively.
The tournament was a resounding success, showcasing the exceptional talent and competitive spirit of young chess players in the region.
