Shillong: Meghalaya Police have arrested six people, including two residents of Haryana, for their alleged involvement in a series of ATM thefts in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district in which nearly Rs 1 crore was stolen from three locations over the past year, a senior officer said on Friday.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, the thefts occurred at ATM kiosks in Mawkriah, Smit and Mylliem between May 2025 and February 2026.
The first incident took place on May 21, 2025, when unidentified miscreants broke open an ATM booth at Mawkriah and stole Rs 28.13 lakh. In another case on December 30, 2025, thieves targeted an ATM at Smit and made away with Rs 35.57 lakh.
A similar break-in was reported on February 8 this year at an ATM kiosk in Mylliem, from where around Rs 35 lakh was stolen.
Following the incidents, cases were registered at Mawngap and Madanrting police stations, after which a detailed investigation was launched.
As part of the probe, a seven-member team from the Special Cell of East Khasi Hills travelled to Haryana’s Nuh district on February 27 to track down the suspects. Acting in coordination with the district police, the team conducted operations and arrested two accused from Nuh city and Pingwan on March 10.
Syiem said the police team also faced an attack while attempting to bring the arrested suspects back from Nuh. The two were later produced before a local court, which remanded them to five days of police custody.
Police also apprehended two alleged local facilitators from Shillong, and a court granted six days of police remand for them.

In a further development on Thursday, another Special Cell team arrested two more persons from Bongaigaon district and near Guwahati in connection with the ATM theft cases.
Investigators said several incriminating items were recovered from the accused.
Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the gang who are still absconding, the SP added.
