Shillong: Shillong Government College of Engineering has received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for starting undergraduate courses in civil engineering and electrical engineering for the academic year 2025-26.

The approval is expected to significantly boost technical education opportunities in the region.

The Letter of Approval (LoA) was issued to the Principal Secretary of Education on April 30.

The institute is located at Mawlai Kynton Massar in the East Khasi Hills district and is affiliated with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong.

Shillong Government College of Engineering will launch two undergraduate programs—Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering—with an initial intake of 30 students each for the 2025-26 academic year.

In accordance with state government policy, an additional 10% of seats will be reserved for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) candidates.

According to the AICTE’s terms and conditions, the institution must meet rigorous standards for infrastructure, faculty recruitment, and academic quality.

The Meghalaya government is expected to provide adequate funds to meet these criteria.

As per rules, no excess admission shall be made by the institution over and above the approved intake under any circumstances.

In case any excess admission is reported to the Council, appropriate action as per the notified regulations shall be initiated against the institution.

The institution is prohibited from conducting technical courses through collaborative arrangements with any Indian or foreign university without obtaining prior approval from AICTE.

The college is also encouraged to participate in national initiatives such as the Smart India Hackathon, ATAL Faculty Development Programs, and student scholarship schemes like Pragati, Saksham, and Swanath.
