Shillong: Meghalaya has seized drugs worth over Rs. 412 crore in the past five years and arrested more than 1,000 individuals linked to trafficking, officials said on Thursday.
Superintendent of Police (Anti-Narcotics Task Force) Giri Prasad said that between 2020 and 2025, law enforcement agencies confiscated 400.99 kg of heroin, 12,756 kg of marijuana, 2,79,636 kg of opium, 76 kg of yaba tablets, 14 kg of crystal meth, and 1,24,906 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. Nearly half of the seized substances have already been destroyed following legal procedures.
“In the last five years, we have arrested 1,061 people and registered 603 cases under various provisions of the law,” Prasad said.
On Thursday, the state government honoured eight officers and personnel of the ANTF for their key role in the state’s biggest single drug bust, valued at Rs. 4 crore, in East Jaintia Hills district.

The awards were presented by Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh, in the presence of ANTF SP Giri Prasad, DREAM Project Mission Director Francis Kharshiing, and DIG (Administration) Jubi G Momin.
The personnel received cash rewards and mementos for their achievement.
Lyngdoh described the recent seizure as a significant milestone in Meghalaya’s anti-narcotics campaign.
“Just last week, our team intercepted drugs worth over Rs. 4 crore in a single operation in East Jaintia Hills,” he said, commending the ANTF for its relentless efforts to dismantle drug syndicates.
The minister noted that Meghalaya’s strategic location makes it a key transit hub for drug traffickers, posing an ongoing challenge for enforcement agencies.
