Shillong: Meghalaya has emerged among the top five beneficiaries of the central government’s “Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale” programme. The state received ₹199 crore from the ₹3,295.76-crore allocation earmarked for 23 states under the challenge-based initiative aimed at developing world-class tourism infrastructure and fostering sustainable economic growth.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma recently showcased Meghalaya’s breathtaking landscapes through a video under the hashtag #DiscoverMeghalaya. Highlighting the state’s natural splendour, he reiterated the government’s commitment to boosting tourism.
The sanctioned funds will support two major projects proposed by the Tourism Department:
Redevelopment of Umiam Lake – ₹99.27 crore
Development of Mawkhanu Village as an Iconic Tourist Destination – ₹99.27 crore
Umiam Lake: A makeover
Plans for Umiam Lake include the creation of a crafts village, an arts and culture pavilion, a botanical garden, an amphitheatre, and supporting infrastructure such as roads and utilities. These upgrades will align with the new Western Bypass Highway, which aims to ease traffic congestion in Shillong and Sohra.
Currently drawing 16,222 visitors annually, Umiam is projected to host over 1.27 lakh tourists each year post-redevelopment. The initiative is expected to generate 1,168 direct jobs and 2,675 indirect jobs through public-private partnerships. Additional attractions, including luxury resorts, glamping sites, and eco-friendly facilities, will make Umiam an attractive destination for leisure and business travellers alike.
Mawkhanu village: Multifunctional tourist hub
The Mawkhanu project envisions a dynamic space for cultural and community events, featuring a Meghalayan Experience Theme Park, a festival ground, and an amphitheatre. It will also host flagship events like the Cherry Blossom Festival, celebrating local arts and heritage.
Designed with accessibility and inclusivity at its core, Mawkhanu is expected to boost tourist footfall to 2.5 lakh annually while creating 1,016 direct jobs and 2,327 indirect jobs. Future plans include public-private collaborations to establish an amusement park, a convention centre, luxury accommodations, and a golf course, ensuring long-term economic vibrancy and sustainability.
Expressing gratitude to the Centre, the chief minister noted that the financial aid reinforces Meghalaya’s vision of developing sustainable, world-class tourism destinations. “These projects will not only elevate the state’s tourism appeal but also preserve its rich cultural and ecological heritage while boosting local livelihoods,” he added.
As Meghalaya sets its sights on creating global-scale tourist attractions, these transformative projects are poised to drive economic growth and enhance the state’s reputation as a premier travel destination.
