Ampati: Schools across South West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, rallied together to promote a tobacco-free future as part of the World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) 2025 campaign.
Students and educators from various institutions took to the streets this month, raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and reinforcing their collective commitment to a healthier Meghalaya.
This year’s WNTD, observed globally on May 31, carries the theme “Tobacco! Business of Death” with a sharp focus on “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products.”
The campaign aims to shine a light on the manipulative marketing strategies employed by the tobacco industry, particularly those targeting young people, while encouraging informed, tobacco-free choices.
The rallies are part of a broader, state-wide movement that has grown steadily over the past three years.
More than 8,000 schools and over five lakh students across Meghalaya have participated in WNTD initiatives including public rallies, awareness sessions, and signature campaigns.

The 2025 campaign is being implemented throughout April and May in schools and colleges across the state, with enthusiastic participation from both rural and urban institutions.
Applauding the efforts of students and educators in the district, South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak, said, “Let us join hands in raising awareness through initiatives like World No Tobacco Day. Through collective behavioural change, we can shape a healthier tomorrow.”
