Shillong: Stepping up pressure on the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC), the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Tuesday issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding the removal of the commission’s secretary, Ashish M Sangma, and immediate implementation of a set of reforms aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in recruitment processes.

The union warned that failure to act within the stipulated timeframe would trigger a series of agitation programmes from January 2026.

The warning follows a recent interaction between the KSU’s Employment Monitoring Cell and the MPSC chairman along with other members of the commission.

According to the union, the meeting focused on long-pending demands such as making public the marks and answer keys of examinations, disclosure of assets held by MPSC employees, and the release of the commission’s annual performance report.

The KSU maintains that these measures are essential to restore public confidence in the recruitment body.

The student organisation has also raised objections to the conduct of a recent typist examination, alleging that it was held in a descriptive format instead of the standard multiple-choice question pattern, leading to irregularities.

On these grounds, the union has demanded that the exam be cancelled.

The KSU further claimed that several recommendations made by a state government-appointed committee in July 2025 to reform the MPSC’s functioning remain unimplemented.

It alleged that certain practices of the commission are in violation of Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) guidelines.

While the MPSC chairman has reportedly sought time until January 2026 to examine and address the demands, the union has rejected any delay.

The ultimatum also comes in the backdrop of Ashish M Sangma’s transfer to another department amid allegations linked to suspected corruption cases, which the KSU said reinforces the need for urgent corrective action.
