Shillong: The relocation of 342 families of Harijan Colony in Shillong, Meghalaya, is likely to be delayed further as the proposed Defence Land for their resettlement faces complications.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma revealed that the state government’s request for allotment of defence land has encountered challenges due to specific military guidelines and procedures.

Speaking to the media, Sangma explained that while the government had sought land from the Defence Ministry for the relocation, certain military protocols are causing delays.

He said, “The Defence Ministry has responded, but the issue is complicated by strict guidelines outlined in the military’s manual, which dictate how land can be used for construction. These include detailed regulations about the minimum distance required between military establishments and new buildings, as well as restrictions on building sizes and other factors.”

The chief minister further emphasised that the army has stringent provisions regarding construction near military areas, which is contributing to the delay.

“These military restrictions are creating some concern for us at this stage,” Sangma added.

While the issue remains unresolved, Sangma assured that the state government is actively pursuing all possible avenues to move forward, including engaging in discussions with the army.

“This has been a long-standing issue, and we are determined to reach a resolution. We are exploring every option to ensure a positive outcome,” he said.

Sangma acknowledged the technical nature of the issue, noting that military procedures are complex and must be followed carefully.

“We are still in discussions and are hopeful for a solution, but it’s too early to provide any definitive timeline,” he concluded.
