Shillong: The Education Department of Meghalaya has disbursed 20% of the total amount under the Umbrella Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe (ST) students as the first instalment for the academic year 2024–25.
The initiative benefits 66,000 eligible students whose bank accounts are Aadhaar-linked.
The remaining amount will be released in 2–3 instalments, subject to the fund release schedule from the Government of India.
In a significant shift from previous years, where the Post-Matric Scholarship was disbursed in 3–4 instalments to specific groups of students, the department has implemented a new system to ensure all beneficiaries receive their share in every instalment.
This change aims to reduce delays and provide timely assistance to students.
The department emphasised that this scholarship is distinct from the Chief Minister’s Scholarship Scheme announced during the last Budget Session.
Registrations for the Chief Minister’s scheme will begin only after the formal notification and release of detailed guidelines.
On June 20, 2025, SMS notifications were sent via the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) to 7,902 students whose Aadhaar seeding or linking with bank accounts remains incomplete.
Beneficiaries are advised to update their Aadhaar linkage within 15 days of receiving the notification.
Following this period, payments for those who have successfully complied will be processed through the NSP payment module.
The NSP system mandates a 15-day waiting period after the SMS notification before initiating any payments, ensuring beneficiaries have adequate time to meet the requirements.
